Semester’s End: Week Sixteen in the Studio
The final week of the semester always feels a little chaotic, and this year was no exception. Emotions were running high as everyone scrambled to address last-minute problems and install their work for final critique. Between preparing for critique and working extra hours at work, it was a hectic but ultimately rewarding week.
For my final critique, I pulled together a display I named EXP GARDEN—short for Experience Garden. The title felt fitting for what this body of work represented: a culmination of experimentation, growth, and discovery over the course of the year. All displayed in a protogarden of sorts.
The installation was a mix of elements that reflected my practice and inspirations. My ceramic pieces were staged alongside a portion of my orchid collection, which added a lush, botanical presence to the display. To complete the atmosphere, I created a soundscape—a layered composition that brought an auditory dimension to the experience. Seeing it all come together in one cohesive presentation was a proud and fulfilling moment.
When it came time for the critique, I decided to step back and let the work speak for itself. Rather than framing the conversation with my own words, I encouraged others to share their thoughts and interpretations first.
This approach led to some fascinating insights. I was offered perspectives I hadn’t considered, along with valuable feedback that I’m excited to incorporate into future projects. The critique felt less like an evaluation and more like a conversation—a chance to reflect on where I’ve been and where I could go next.
Looking at my work in its entirety, I felt a deep sense of accomplishment. This semester pushed me to try new techniques, wrestle with challenging ideas, and embrace both successes and failures as part of the creative process.
I also found myself reflecting on the community I’ve been a part of. Seeing everyone’s final works and hearing their ideas reminded me of the shared journey we’ve all been on. The studio isn’t just a place to make—it’s a place to connect, collaborate, and grow.
While this week marked the end of the semester, it feels more like a beginning. The feedback I received has sparked ideas for how I can refine my craft and deepen my concepts. There’s always more to learn, and I’m eager to see how these new directions unfold.
This semester has been a garden of experiences, and I can’t wait to see what blooms next… gosh, that’s so corny but true.
I want to take a moment to thank my professor, Brian Harper and my fellow Dirt Bags for making it such a meaningful and inspiring semester. Your encouragement, insightful feedback, and the countless cathartic conversations we’ve shared have been invaluable.
To my professor, thank you for your guidance, patience, and knowledge of creating with intention. Your support has been a cornerstone of my growth this semester.
To my peers, I’m so grateful for the community we’ve built together. Sharing this all with you has been a privilege, and your creativity and camaraderie have been my third place and a true source of joy for me.
Much Love,
Jooby
