Groundwork: Week Five in the Studio

The beginning of the week kept the momentum of the week prior. Ideas for a new body of sculptures were sketched out and printed. I finally have the starts of the ‘mood board’ I’ve always dreamed of. Somehow I always overlook the importance of reference and goals. Having what I want the works to theoretically look like, right in front of me, is invaluable. Two of these sculptures began taking form over the week’s course and I started to have a feeling of growth.

I’m still not sure what to calls these forms. Something between a flower and an alien. An alluring form that is both distant and recognizable. Something in-between.

Another big part of the week were my out-of-studio commitments. I attended a major show that many of classmates had work in, as well as set up a booth for a show I had been invited to vend at.

The Ohio Valley Biennial was a really great show in many aspects. Many of the works they had selected showcased a huge range of creative minds within our region of the country. I notable moment of joy was seeing current classmates work alongside previous mentors and educators. Weaving through pedestals to find a certain vantage points where many worlds collided and illustrated our interconnectedness. Pictures below juxtapose work of my fellow post bacc, Kade HB and my previous professor Travis Townsend.

I capped the week off by finishing a collaboration with one of classmates, Molly. After putting on the final touches, I carefully transported it the Aurora. Where it was arranged to be in displayed during their show, Season of the Witch.

It was a busy but satisfying week. I feel accomplished in the work I put into my personal practice. As well as the efforts made towards a better, more vigorous professional practice.
